ECONOMIST SIGNALS PROBLEM OF OUTFLOW OF ABLE-BODIED POPULATION ABROAD

03 may, 2024

Recently, mostly young people aged 25 to 34 years old have been migrating from Moldova, which has a negative impact on the labor market in the country. As INFOTAG reports, economist Veaceslav Ionita said in an online program on Friday.

“In 2020 in Moldova - 834 thousand employed, of which 602 thousand - officially, and 233 thousand - informally. In 2024, it is estimated that there will be 880 thousand employed, of which 630 thousand are officially and 250 thousand informally. We have reached the minimum number of employed people in Moldova in 2020. The pandemic has seriously affected the real sector of the national economy. In 2024 we will have a slight recovery. This is not growth, but rather a recovery after the pandemic, unfortunately a rather late recovery. The sharpest decline occurred in the agricultural sector,” Veaceslav Ionita said.

The expert touched upon the number of working-age population (15-64 years old) - in 2015, there were 2.62 million people in the country, of which about 2 million were in the country and the rest abroad. In 2023 - 2.47 million, of which 1.65 million were in the country and 819,000 abroad.”
